London Day-3

Hey all, still here where they drive on the right (ie: correct (ie: left(I have loyalty to my southpawedness))) side of the road.

Yesterday was fun. The ‘rents and I traveled by train to the town of Battle which is where the Battle of Hastings was felt (the town was named after the battle which was named after another town. The irony of this, I think, is not lost on the people who live there.) We got to hear all about how William the Conqueror slammed his head against Harold’s shield wall for a few hours, then faked the Saxons out with a false retreat. Yeah, I knew all that going in, but it was still really cool to see. It was also a nice trainride, then walk through the English countryside. I’m glad we’ve had a chance to get out of the hectic-dectic pace of London and see another part of the country.

Ate in a pub in Battle, deep fried Cod, which was better then it might sound, and half a glass of the local ale, which is the best beer I’ve had, though I don’t think I’d import any to the states.

My mother had us go to “Speaker’s Corner” this morning, which is where the crazies get up to rant about… well…. things. There was only one crazy, though, and he seemed only half-hearted in his ranting. I didn’t even have the heart to heckle ‘im as everybody just walked away. My mother said “Maybe it would be better in the afternoon.” Considering that it was cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey (a phrase that does not involve naval gunnery in any way), I bet it would be better in June.

Spent much of the day in the British Museum, which is the place to be, developing sore legs and feet. It was great, though, as we saw the Elgin Marbles (Parthenon Statues, my ass) and the Sutton Hoo artifacts. Lots of bending over and peering at things. My latin failed me, though, as I couldn’t make head or tale of the inscriptions. Freaking romans, can’t they use some spaces now and again?

The evening was punctuated with a visit to the cinema, which was quite expensive and really quite small. We saw “The Constant Gardner” which was cool and eerie and suspenseful. I’m not sure I could give a competent review and I’m not sure I’d recommend it to other anyway, but I enjoyed it. Very gritty.

Have to run now. Take care all.

Reporting to you from deep in the heart of London

I’ll make this post quick. The plane-ride is most of what has transpired since I left Dallas. Since it was 8 hours and I only slept 2, everything after that has been sort of fuzzy. London is cold, but we’re here and fine and jet-lagged.
